…becoming a follower of Jesus Christ?
Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life” (Luke 9:23-24, NLT).
That’s exactly what Jesus did for us – He lost His life so that we could have life. To follow Jesus is to trust in Him as Lord and Savior surrendering my life to be lived for Him alone. “Salvation” is offered by the grace of God, and all who trust that what Jesus did is enough for salvation (put their faith in Him) will be saved.
You might ask…So, what do I need to be saved from? Check out that verse again…the answer is SELF. Everybody is selfish and has chosen self over God. What does that mean? It means we are all sinners in need of God’s forgiveness and grace.
He saves us from ourselves, from our unbelief, from our sinfulness that prohibits us from being restored in Him by our own efforts. We condemn ourselves in our unbelief (John 3:18), but when we believe that our sin is taken care of becaue Jesus died on a cross, we stand UNCONDEMNED, free to follow Jesus and walk in daily relationship with Him.
God’s love for us is based on who He is…not on our worth. In fact, our works in no way can “save” us (Ephesians 2:8-10). Only Jesus can. When we trust in Jesus, He restores us through His love and His life given freely for us on the cross nearly 2000 years ago.
Here’s the bottom line question: Are you living for YOU or have you surrendered to HIM? If you decide to live for you, you lose everything and stand condemned in your own unbelief.
If you decide to follow jesus and live for Him, you surrender everything only to gain more than you ever deserved…life abundant and freedom from the condemnation of sin. Will you trust Him? Will you commit to daily follow Him?
