doing life together

When Jesus invites us to follow him, we believe it's an invitation to join him in the greatest and most important adventure imaginable. He doesn't ask anyone to become a religious person, but rather to follow Him in loving relationship and fully engage with people that they might know the life-changing love of God.

Doing life in close relationship together is central to experiencing that love. Jesus said in John 13:34-35 that people would know that we follow Him because of our love for one another. We need each other. We lean on each other. We care for each other. We encourage each other to not only live beyond self, but also to live beyond just our church family. Why? Because how we love one another as a church family matters most to those who see us loving each other. It is crucial so that other people are introduced to the ways of Jesus through our love.

The "gospel" (the good news) as the Bible calls it is simply this: God came near. A holy God did not stay far off from an unholy people who betrayed His love. Instead, even though we betrayed Him, He took the initiative to restore the relationship that we had broken. He came near. We must do the same. We cannot stay huddled in church culture. If we are following Jesus, then we must live sent. And if we must live sent, then we must have meaningful relationships with people beyond church culture. We must take God's love near to them.

Doing life together is central both to the mission of how the church cares for one another, as well as how the church was intended to care for people everywhere. We must do life together by connecting, serving, taking risks, and following God wherever and however He leads. That is when the love and hope of Jesus will spread and sprout up among us as God intended humanity to happen - in profound, selfless togetherness.

So, may we love God and love people on the same level to which Jesus called us to commit. May we hurt with each other when one hurts and rejoice with each other when one rejoices. May we be hope to all who feel hopeless. May we stand for those who cannot. May we feed those who are hungry. May we give drink to those who are thirsty. May we provide to those who are needy. May we be fathers and mothers to those without. May we unite together with other churches in this community to be the church to West Orange County and beyond. May we partner with a larger network of local churches committed to starting and restarting churches in Central Florida. May we live sent daily to be a sentence in the grander story that Jesus is writing in and through us - an amazing story of love. May others know Him because of our love for one another.
